Biospheres weeks 4&5
The three biospheres have undergone some significant changes during the past two weeks. The one which has been nurtured manually looks still pretty much the same as it did in week 3, but hints of mold are starting to show and some of the smaller sprouts are dying off.
The closed biosphere is starting to show the lack of added oxygen and plants have slowly started to die off. I have mixed feelings while observing this process. It is both exiting to see what kind of a new form the life in the glass jar will take, but it’s making me also sad to see the plants slowly withering away and the Wolpertinger inside starting to be increasingly covered in mold.
The life in the biosphere left outside has also taken a turn for the worse. Instead of new growth, which could still be observed in week 4, plants started to rot during week 5. Although this biosphere had access to a fresh supply of oxygen, the surrounding climate has been hot and humid during the past two weeks. And I think “someone” (most likely a snail) has been snacking on the plants which were still sticking out the top of the glass the week prior. If you look closely you can actually see a snail peeking out from under a leaf on the right side of the biosphere in the picture taken during week 5.
During week 4 I discovered a small snail living inside the biosphere. However, I was not able to find it again one week later.
Life is getting dark in the outdoor biosphere.
Decay is starting to take over inside the sweaty glass jar.
